So I know that I flew half way across the world, in part, to stop stressing about the November election, but that definitely hasn't happened. My host family has a TV and we watched Palin's speech this morning. Are you kidding me? Did she actually say "Well as Mayor of my town, I had responsibilities and that qualifies me to rule the country." Of course she had responsibilities... she did things like cut ribbons at mall opening ceremonies and attend parades....
Here's my impression of her speech: "I have a family. Family family family. Aren't they so perfect except for my disabled son? See! We're a normal American family... except more perfect because unlike most Americans, me and my husband will never ever get divorced! Perfect perfect perfect! We're so perfect and American, we're sending our son to die in Iraq just to show how much we support our Country! I love America SOOOOOO much! Even though I don't actually live in the continental US... but Alaska's not 'exotic' like Hawaii or anything. It's a good All-American state. Woo hoo. And I'm totally qualified to be VP because mayors have... responsibilites and stuff... And as for my policies..... Well, I live in Alaska, so I know that drilling there is A-ok! Let's erect pipelines ALL over Alaska! Then it will be an even BETTER place for us people! Yay drilling! Obama totally sucks! I want McCain to be President. Oh, and did I mention how perfect my beautiful family is? And did you see my lovely botoxed face?!?"
I think that pretty much sums it up... the part I heard anyway. So much for being away from the News, but PLEASE for the love of ALL that is holy, America, elect Obama. People here are struggling not to starve and they STILL tell me America must elect Obama. Come now America... This Palin lady might as well be Ann Coulter. All she can do is look pretty and bash democrats. Do you really want her to be one step away from Comander in Cheif??
Other than that, I haven't been feeling so sick, and Nepal's been good. Turns out that preteen girls play the same games I played when I was young. Small world.

I think you captured Palin's speech perfectly. (I must confess, I only reead the text; I couldn't stand to watch it.) I think all of us have to work as hard as we can to elect Obama, because I am afraid the hypocritical, but perfect-at-spinnin Repubs will pull out all stops. I am sure Rev. Wright will be back in October. Glad you are feeling better. Keep blogging; I love reading your posts even when I don't have time to answer.
I am writing this as I am "listening" to McCain'sspeech in the other rm. I think it is pretty much what I expected. The camera keeps moving to Gov.Palin- some kind of love affair there. The one thing I found compelling was McCain's 96 yr oldMother. You are probably fortunate in some ways that you will not be in the U.S. in the next couple of months, because it will not be pretty, even as McCain pledges hisdesire for a hard fought but positive campaign. Yeah, rightt? Your frustrations with someof the dynamics of the kids and thefamilies seem normal and I suspectuniversal for someone in your shoes. I believe that your dedication and stick to it spiritwill undoubtedly result in a positive influence/change for someof the people that you encounter. Be well and peaceful/happy inmind and spirit...love...Jerry
Who is in charge of that place you are working with the HIV-positive children? Someone must be responsible for setting the tone re: sharing and other appropriate values. This is not a cultural point; it's an organizational one.
This may be a ridiculous question, but are you voting absentee? I'm guessing it'd be hard to fenangle that far away but we can use all the help we can get back here.
Even though I'm two-thirds of the way to becoming an "official" Texan, I'm being a bad kid and voting in PA for Obama. Goodness knows that my vote counts for absolutely nothing at all here. :(
hey Jenn, I am wracking my brain trying to think of some way to make a difference in this campaign but the problem is I can't think of anyone who will vote for McCain. I just don't know those people.
I'm glad you're feeling better. Are there no volunteers who have been there longer than you to give you some pointers? Also, one thing you could try is to teach some songs. There are lots of good children's songs they can learn by singing back to you and some can even teach turn-taking. If you want, I'll ask the folks at school for some good websites for circle games and songs. Be well!
